Personal Preparations

It's more to do with the general recession that has me doing these things, but the Y2K issues could be the straw that breaks the camel's back when added on top of everything else that's going on now.

On a personal level I've decided to make a few minor adjustments to my life style. For the most part it’s no change at all, but it’s little things like this that enhances one’s ability to survive life’s various slings and arrows and if more people did these things, society as a whole would be much more able to handle what ever comes our way. Just think of these as inexpensive insurance.

Some people will be in denial to the very end

1) To not travel by plane (at least for personal reasons) for the next two years and after August try to keep my activities to within a gas tank's of home or my Parents. Late in August 1999 (22nd?) the GPS clocks roll over, it shouldn't be a problem but..... It's not like I travel that much anyways.

2) Make sure that I always have cash with me and keep the car gassed up. As we get closer to 2000 and more problems come to light the higher these levels will be maintained. I figure that early 1999 I'll get a gas container and by the end of the summer heat will make sure that is full and stabilized.

3) Make sure that I have hardcopies of all financial transactions.

4) Try to keep increased supply levels, specifically to make sure that I'm never (or at least rarely) in the position of having to go to the store NOW to get a given supply. E.g.

a) For low rate, long store, consumables like toothpaste and soap, keeping stocks of more than a years worth.

b) For long storable foods (canned and dried), a couple months worth of normal use, especially if it can be eaten as is if needed (like Chef Boyardee)

5) Making sure that my parent's place (out in the country with a large garden, some fruit trees, well water, on a lake with fish) is reasonably prepared with better stocks of food staples, alternate power source, pickling salt, How To: books (like: to make salami, to make a windmill, to identify natural sources of vitamins, etc...), and other useful bits & stuff

6) Get hunting points for my arrows and make sure that I can buy ammunition, just in case I see the worst case scenario starting to happen I'd pick some up on the way to my parents.

As I find good pointers, I'll be adding them.
